Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Background on Conviction

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
